Havasu Falls, 2002, 2' x 4' Water-based Oil

Havasupai Indian Reservation, in a remote side canyon of Arizona’s Grand Canyon, provides an oasis from the surrounding barren desert and heat. Towering cliffs, sacred waters invite me into…God’s own country! Wildlife scuttles cautiously along precipice-filled trails.

Steep canyon walls guard the river from awe-inspiring heights, generously offering shade and protection to the sparse trees crouching by the water’s edge. A lone rider descends slowly into the depths, hugging the walls, as aboveground consciousness drops away. Winds and rains whip through this canyon on a regular basis, turning the peaceful pools of Havasu Creek into a raging torrent on very short notice. Shrubs are bent and twisted in artistic response to the whims and force of raging water and passing air currents.  Opaque streams of water pour from rock crevices high in the cliffs, crashing into white foam…swallowed almost immediately by the deep turquoise waters…
