The figures that I paint are sometimes “Androgynous” not by design but from the innermost spirit of my being as I am painting them. I want the viewer to be able to interpret the culture, gender, race and era of my subjects based on their needs at that moment in time . . . (thanks to a conversation with Celeste Rich of Celestial Creations which helped me clarify others’ understanding of my unique way of expressing self) My earlier Florida work (marine seascapes in oil) evolved into a "fluid flow" approach to all subjects during my art therapy courses at Springfield College. Introduced to water-based oils at that time, I have found them more free-flowing and less toxic to my health. Additionally, the benefits of creating art became more apparent to me then … personally and through observing children and adults in art therapy treatment and workshops. My own artwork has provided me with answers and emotional release during times of illness and stress in my life. While receiving conventional treatments for breast cancer in 1992, I found that creative artwork and holistic health treatments (Reiki) enabled quicker recovery. When words are too painful, art can provide the means to integrate emotional, mental and physical factors through the images that lie deep within … healing both body and soul. The pressence of music is also an important part of my process, for a positive vibration assists in creating the mood and centering the image. Additionally, being in the presence of nature restores a peace and balance not found in our present day world turmoil of action. Stress, pain, grief: the imagination aids in reaching past these feelings to return to a more joyful and natural state. This in turn creates a deeper sense of self, restores a feeling of well-being and connects us all in the miracle of an eternal world of living energy. |
